Red Door's
chief composer Ian Parkison, has won international recognition
for his work with the Hong Kong Tourism Board's video “ Have
you eaten yet ”. This tourism video has won 5 gold awards
from respected international film festivals including the prestigious
New York Film Festival and the Berlin Film Festival.
Having grown
up in Hong Kong, Ian has been around Asian culture and instruments
since he could hit a drum with a stick. This understanding of
Asian instruments means that he can write out parts for the Erhu
(Chinese Violin), Guzheng (Chinese Harp), Dizi (Chinese flute)
and many other instruments, creating a modern yet traditional
sound.
Ian's remix
work for David Bowie, Dave Stewart, Laura Fygi, Alessandro Safina
and Camelia, have been highly commended by the original artists
themselves. Ian has created an Asian-inspired
remix for the classic track "China Girl," which has
received airplay on MTV Asia. The soul-stirringly ambient
remix has led Bowie himself to claim "This is one of the
coolest remixes someone has ever done for me."
Over the past
10 years, Ian has worked on hundreds of TV commercials in a very
broad range of styles. Ian's many talents in the studio means
that in addition to composing and arranging, he is also often
seen producing, recording, mixing, and playing percussion. Sound
design is a passion for Ian too, to the point of taking some recording
gear with him to far-flung holidays in places like Morrocco and
Vietnam. These unusual sounds captured from jungles to markets,
end up as the strangest and most exciting noises when mixed up
and mangled with his digital wizardry.
Ias had
musicians from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Nepal, plus the principles
from the HK Philharmonic come in and play on many of his projects.
